01How El Salvador Entry Works

El Salvador classifies every country in the world into one of three entry categories, determined by the Government of El Salvador. Your entry requirements depend entirely on your passport nationality — not where you live or which other visas you hold.

Citizens of more than 80 countries — including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia, and all of Central and South America — can enter El Salvador freely with just their passport. No advance application, no fees, no waiting. A stay of up to 90 days is permitted for tourism and short business visits.

For all other nationalities, El Salvador requires either a Special Entry Permit (PEI) or a consulted visa obtained through a consulate. The PEI is the most common route — it is an online permit that can be obtained from anywhere in the world before your trip, without visiting an embassy.

02The Special Entry Permit (PEI) Explained

The Permiso Especial de Ingreso (PEI) is an online travel authorization issued by the Government of El Salvador. It was created as a modern alternative to the traditional consulate-based visa, allowing travelers from eligible countries to visit El Salvador without ever setting foot in an embassy. The PEI is applied for entirely online, costs $100 USD, and once approved is sent directly to your email.

Processing typically takes 1 to 5 business days. You must present the approved PEI — printed or on your phone — at the port of entry upon arrival. The authorized length of stay is determined at the time of approval, up to a maximum of 30 days. The PEI cannot be obtained at the border; it must be arranged before you travel.

We recommend applying at least two weeks before your departure date. Processing times can vary, and there is no expedited option. Travelers who arrive without the required PEI may be denied entry. When ready to apply, use the official Government of El Salvador portal and verify the URL belongs to the official .gob.sv government domain.

03What Every Traveler Needs at the Border

Regardless of your entry category, all travelers to El Salvador are expected to present certain documents at the port of entry. Being prepared avoids delays and ensures a smooth experience at immigration.

• →Valid passport with at least 6 months of validity beyond your planned departure date from El Salvador.
• →Return or onward ticket showing proof that you intend to leave El Salvador.
• →Proof of sufficient funds — approximately $30 USD per day of your intended stay.
• →Accommodation details — a hotel reservation or the address where you will be staying in El Salvador.
• →PEI or consulted visa (if required by your nationality) — Category B and C travelers must carry their approved document.

Entry to El Salvador is always at the discretion of the immigration officer at the port of entry. Even with all documents in order, an officer may ask additional questions. Being polite, prepared, and straightforward is always the best approach.

04Tips for a Smooth Entry

4. 04.Check your passport expiry carefully. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you plan to leave El Salvador — not just from your arrival date.
